“Dear student volunteer

Students at the University of Southampton would not benefit from a fantastic range of opportunities during their time here without your help

We know you freely give up your time and energy to make a difference for your fellow students, either by running a club or society, representing and supporting students, running amazing events, fundraising, volunteering in the local community and a host of other activities. In order to make this happen, SUSU, in a variety of ways, ensures that you receive all the support and resources you need to successfully volunteer – this might be from covering the cost of expenses or providing training, to support from your elected officers and staff.

However, we are never complacent and applied for the Investing in Volunteers (IIV) Kite mark over 3 years ago as we felt it would help us to continually evaluate and improve our support for all our volunteers. The IIV Kite mark is the UK quality standard for all organisations which involve volunteers – more information can be viewed here:; several Student Unions also now bear this Kite mark and we are very proud of that achievement. Receiving the Kite mark has helped us make significant improvements and investment in our support for volunteers.

However, to retain the Kite mark and continue the excellent work already begun, we need to undergo the reassessment and this is happening next week! To do this successfully, we need to ask you to come and help us by attending one of the group sessions where the assessor will be talking to volunteers to find out how you volunteer in SUSU and the types of work you do find out how SUSU supports you – after all, we can tell the assessor everything we do but only you the volunteer can tell it how it really is for you.

These sessions will be held in the Clubs and Societies Room on Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th May. We have sectioned each day into specific areas to help the assessor and in so doing, as far as possible, keeping volunteer groups together;
• Societies Officers; Tuesday 10th – 11.10-11.40, 11.40-12.10, 12.10-12.40, 13.10-13.40, 13.40-14.10 and Wednesday 11th at 13.25-13.55.
• RAG; Tuesday 10th – 13.40-14.10
• AU Officers; Tuesday 10th – 14.10-14.40, Wednesday 11th – 10.55-11.25, 11.25-11.55
• JCR’s; Wednesday 11th – 11.25-11.55
• Community Volunteers; Wednesday 11th – 11.55-12.25, 13.25-13.55, Thursday 12th – 10.20-10.50
• Course reps; Thursday 12th – 11.00-11.30, 13.30-14.00, 14.00-14.30, 14.30-15.00.
• School Presidents and Vice Presidents; 15.10-15.40.

Some of you will have already been contacted but we have decided to ask as many volunteers as possible as we really don’t want to risk losing the Kite mark. If you have already been contacted please advise if you can make your allotted time slot.

Please would you email Becki Newstead on as quickly as possible to let us know if you could help out at all

…. and don’t forget, ANYONE ATTENDING THE SESSION WILL RECEIVE A UNION FILMS CINEMA VOUCHER along with refreshments during the session itself

Thank you!
