Vice President Winchester & Sites By-Election Update

Last week I wrote about a proposal to split the role into Vice President Winchester and Vice President Sites as two part time roles covering 20 hours a week each.

The other officers and I all felt we were unlikely to get a student who would run for the full time position given that they would have to suspend their course for a year.

Listening to comments from other officers and students we have put forward the following motion which needs to be approved by Union Council on Monday.

Here is an excerpt from the motion:

This Union Resolves

  1. To hold elections for Vice President Winchester and Vice President Sites and to split the job role as follows:

Vice President Winchester

  1. 1.     Work with Winchester campus to determine the needs of those students:
  2. 2.     Working closely with the Sabbatical team to deliver SUSU to Winchester
  3. 3.     Developing provision at Winchester; giving all students the specific support they need
  4. 4.     Develop teams of Student Leaders and Voluntary Officers at Winchester and train and support them

Vice President Sites

  1. 1.     Work with all (other) satellite campuses and students on placements to determine the needs of those students.
  2. 2.     Develop strategies to create and implement a plan for the delivery of Union services to all sites
  3. 3.     Ensure the Union is sustainable in its outreach activities
  4. 4.     Working closely with the Sabbatical team to deliver SUSU to all satellite sites (excluding Winchester)
    1. That these two Vice Presidents will not be trustees, but will be elected by a cross campus ballot of all full members.
    2. That they will be expected to work 20 hours a week for half the normal Sabbatical pay.

This Union Mandates

  1. Elections Committee to set up these elections such that the officers are in post by Christmas
  2. The new Vice president Sites to fulfil the mandate detailed in Notes 2.

Proposed by: Sam Ling

Seconded by: Joseph Mcloughlin”

It can be read in full here

If a candidate were to come forward who could complete the whole role, they could stand in both elections, and if elected in both would take up a full time roll. This gives the best of both worlds and avoids holding a normal by-election which may not be filled.

If the motion is approved on Monday it will kick of the by-election process with the following timetable:

Nominations open: Thursday 10th November 2011

Nominations close and campaigning begins:  Monday 14th November 2011

Voting opens: Wednesday 16th November 2011

Voting closes and results announced: 18th November

Leave your comments for or against the motion or come to Union Council (anyone can come and speak) Monday 5pm, in the cube.

I think it’s a great idea for this year to split it into two roles, although I do feel that it excludes third years, who will be too busy and first years, who will still be finding their feet, so I think It will end up being a second year role. However it is the only real solution this year.

I really hope that next year it becomes a full time position again.
