SOUTHAMPTON VS PORTSMOUTH VARSITY 2012. Results are in……………….
The day is Sunday March 4th 2012. Wet, windy, cold, bleak. A day that epitomises the Great British winter (yes I know, March is definitely not winter but it’s England. You never know what you’re going to get). Yet this day sets the scene for one of the most epic Varsity events in the Southampton VS Portsmouth Varsity series.
Both sides braved harsh weather conditions and heavily flooded pitches to showcase the outstanding talents and determination that our student athletes possess. Wide Lane saw many rugby games go ahead with players head to toe covered in the turf they played on. Lacrosse, Tennis and men and women brave the cold and play their hearts out. Every club out there representing our University went out and showed the passion that makes Southampton great.
On Highfield campus was where we really dominated. Trampoline, Swimming and Ladies Basketball kicking us off in the Jubilee and all teams won for Southampton. Southampton walked away with a whitewash in snooker. This culminated in one of the tightest and most epic finishes with the netball 2nd team taking a 32-31 win in the final 30 seconds of the match.
The Overall score at the end of the day:
Southampton 105 vs 66 Portsmouth
For the 4th year running Southampton are victorious over Portsmouth in the Southampton VS Portsmouth varsity series and we look forward to another victory next year lead by the new VP Sports Development elect Dean Jones.

Massive thanks go out to Wessex Scene, Soton Tab, SUSUtv, SURGE and Photosoc for making the day even better and braving the weather to get coverage of the event.
Meanwhile, we may have won this battle (again) but the war goes on…………
P.S. While we wait for the Varsity videos to come, we may as well have a look at our very own promo video made by Will Handley 🙂

If you were a bit more organised you would have had a few more teams taking part… a lot of disappointed people from both Unis all because someone wasn’t organised enough to contact the relevent people…

Hi George,
I would like you to know that myself and Dan Black (the VP Sport at Portsmouth) sat down together on August 26th and went through every club or society that we had that we thought could compete together in varsity because it was our intention that every club and society would have the opportunity to compete in Varsity where possible. This year we had more teams competing then ever before. An e-mail was sent out before the Christmas break to all of the clubs and societies to ask if they wanted to participate in varsity. For obvious reasons the only clubs and societies we could choose were ones where they both got back to us (not just one).
If you feel you should’ve been one of these clubs or societies then maybe you could pop down to the sabbatical office in the SUSU building and have a chat about this and see what we can do moving forward.
It would really help if clubs and societies that really wanted to compete in Varsity actually approached us and made clear of their intentions because it’s a shame when critical comments are made after the event that really could’ve been avoided if we were notified. Perhaps something could’ve been organised.
Once again, if you want to talk about this more please come and see me in the sabbatical office.
