Revitalize, review and deliver

Hello fellow SUSU goers! As you all already know by now, the sabbatical team and I have been planning out our 3 goals for this year, now it’s finally my turn to tell you mine.

1)      Revitalize the Union-Winchester

The Union-Winchester is a fantastic space which is full of potential that can benefit the students studying at Winchester from societies, to a good ole night out, but serious improvements need to be made. I think it’s time for a reboot.

First things first: a deep-clean, re-paint and new furniture! A deep clean means a clean, fresh, non-sticking to the floor students union. By re-painting the walls white, the curation team can put up and exhibit work without the fuss of painting the union themselves. With the new furniture, the union can be utilized in a social space, for students to escape from the stresses of work or participate in other activities, from our societies to cold beverage.

As well as this, I am hoping to put a new café in place round the front of the union, where students can sit comfortably and do their work in a less stressful environment. As well as this, the students can enjoya different flavoured coffees from around the world, as well as teas, cold beverages and cake, in a much lighter space. I also want to refurbish the garden, turning the outside from a plain and cold patio, to a proper beer garden.

2)      The Sites review

The purpose of the review is to develop an understanding of what happens at each site, and what the students want. By doing this, we at SUSU will understand what we can do for each site to make it better. The process of the review falls under three simple stages:

  • Audit – understanding what students want at each site and how they operate
  • Vision – understanding of what students want out of SUSU
  • Structure – achieve the vision with the appropriate resources

3)      You decide

The point of the sites review is essentially to find out what students at sites want, and is an important development into knowing more about our Sites students. As this would take up a vast majority of my year here, it would be useful to hear from those students directly, so I could some smaller changes in place, almost straight away. This is why my third goal is entirely down to you. Tell what you want, and I will you the relevant resources to achieve your visions.

So, heres the brief outline of my aims for this year. Now I want to know your thoughts. Is there anything else I should be looking into? Already have thoughts on what you want to change or do at your site? Or whould you like to help take part in the Site review? Drop me an email at vpsites@susu.org, or leave a comment below. Cheers!

    Thank you very much, Anonymous!

Things seem to have already taken off in regards to the re design of the SU, which I’m really excited about, is there anything you’d like to see with the re-design? or anything else at all?

Great first blog Nicole and some great goals there! I think you have a fantastic attitude towards it all and nice to see that you have put practical ways of how to achieve your goals. I’m glad to see that the sites review is going ahead this year too.

    Good luck!

Hi Sam! I agree with you there, if the SU had been a bit lighter and cleaner i may have gone in more when i was a student.

I’m Hoping with the walls being painted etc, it’ll encourage the curation team to have a constant flow exhibitions up, and maybe a few permanent works as well. The big hope is for students to take ownership of the student union, and not be afraid to exhibit work there, or even use it as an extra studio space as well!

Is there anything else you’d like to see change with the SU?
