Do You Like Women?

 

Because I do!

March 8th of every year marks the annual International Women’s Day, a global celebration of the achievements and experiences of women. The day commemorates how far women have come over the last century; from obtaining the vote, to fighting for equal pay (an ongoing battle!), rising up in the workplace, or achieving exceptional things in academia.

SUSU and University of Southampton have been working together to celebrate IWD for decades, and this year it’s going to be bigger, better and more womanly than ever!

Since one day is simply not enough, we are stretching our celebrations out across a week, with a whole host of activities and events for everyone to attend. I thought I’d highlight a few particularly special events below, to whet your appetite:

 

Monday 4th March 

‘Women in Industry: What Shaped Your Career?’

5pm -7pm – The Observatory, Building 85 – free

Are you interested in hearing about successful women’s career journeys? Would you like to know more from inspiring women from various sectors who can answer a variety of questions as to the choices they made and the paths they have taken? Hear from women at the top of their businesses, be that finance, the charity sector, the military – we even have the founder of the Venus Award for women in business joining us.

Monday 4th March 

‘An Evening of Women’s Bits’

7pm – The Bridge, SUSU – £3 (students) /£5 (staff)

An evening of theatre, poetry and song, performed by students and staff at Southampton. The monologues come from all ages – classics like Antigone come together with original work by our students and members of Theatre Group and beyond. The first 50 tickets sold will get you a half price IWD cocktail so get them quick here!

Friday 8th March

‘Women Shaping Society’

5:30pm – The Bridge, SUSU – free

What a night this is going to be… cocktails, buffet, a capella music from Carmina (from Jazzmanix), a fashion show from the Afro-Caribbean Society, cupcakes, Winchester School of Art exhibition, and three fantastic inspirational speakers: Professor Jessica Corner, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and leader in the field of Cancer treatment; Nyovani Madise, director of the Centre for Global Health, Population, Poverty, and Policy and reproductive rights specialist; and Councillor Sarah Bogle, political activist and councillor for Bargate.

This night really is unmissable. And it’s free! Come along at 5:30pm sharp to meet some incredible women and have yourself a cocktail or three! Be sure to bring your friends for an amazing night, and find out more info here.

Tell your friends, your lecturers, your nan… Just make sure that whether you identify as female, male or anywhere in between, you’re there with us to celebrate!
