Should SUSU ban initiations?

So no funny blog title this time, just a straight-up simple question (well, maybe not that simple)!

This was one of the ideas submitted to the last Union Council with a view to update our current policy that has been around since 2003 due to it being very outdated (referring to officers and committees that no longer exist), and only affecting Athletic Union clubs.

After much discussion at council it was decided that the best course of action would be to do some wider consultation and set up a working group to work on bringing a formal policy proposal to a later council, as when talking about issues like this it is always a balance between making student groups as inclusive and welcoming as possible, whilst not imposing unnecessary regulation that will limit them running in the way they see fit.

We will be starting this consultation with an open session this Thursday where we will will go over the discussions had so far, and delve a little deeper into the following issues (and many more).

  • Should SUSU have a policy on this issue?
  • What should the policy cover?
  • which groups should such a policy affect?
  • how, and how strictly should SUSU enforce such a policy?
  • What should be the next steps?

If you would like to have your say on this issue then please come along to our first open session this Thursday 4-5 in meeting room 2 in the Union.

This is interesting and it raises some tricky questions!
How would SUSU plan to enforce this policy?
Would there be consequences if it were broken?

Hi SUSU enthusiast, thanks for your comment. Yes it is quite a thorny issue, and it is these sort of issues that we hope to address (as I think a policy that you can’t/don’t enforce is worse than having no policy at all). If you are able to come along to the session today it would be great to get your views on the issue.

You think people take notice of the initiations policy? Loads of AU clubs still do it. I have been initiated and have initiated many more over my 7 years in Southampton.

Let people have their own fun and stop meddling. No one in 5 years of me initiating people has left the club or felt they would be outcast if they weren’t.
