The AGM – ideas ranking

Although you could see how it was progressing throughout the day, we have the results of the AGM polling. This is a new system that we tried for the first time this year, and I’m incredibly happy with how many of you took part.

  • 28 ideas submitted
  • 350 students polling with a total of over 5000 votes in just 24 hours.
For those interested: the ranking of ideas was based around the difference between votes for and against multiplied by the sum of for and against as a proportion of all votes

Here is the ranking:

1 Should SUSU keep facilities costs for student groups to a minimum?
2 Should SUSU create a student-led committee to run Friday Nights at the Cube?
3 Should SUSU ensure more money for societies?
4 Should SUSU increase the Athletic Union and Society budgets?
5 Should SUSU improve its range of healthy food options in its outlets?
6 Should SUSU renovate the Activities Room?
7 Should SUSU mandate student groups to send representatives to the SUSU AGM?
8 Should SUSU create a statue for our cat?
9 Should SUSU improve its vegan and vegetarian options in its outlets?
10 Should SUSU lobby the University to enforce the smoking ban more stringently on campus?
11 Should SUSU move Student Leader elections to the Summer Term?
12 Should SUSU address gender inequality in officer teams?

The rest of the ideas received more votes to ‘not discuss’:

13 Should SUSU remove the print version of the Wessex Scene?
14 Should SUSU mandate the Athletic Union to hold more sporting tournaments?
15 Should SUSU create a new martial arts training room?
16 Should SUSU review the Athletic Union’s affiliating to British University & Colleges Sport (BUCS)?
17 Should SUSU create a website fixer reward scheme?
18 Should SUSU rename the Edge?
19 Should SUSU lobby the University to hire staff for improving International students’ ability to work?
20 Should SUSU elect Vice President Engagement and Vice President Student Communities on a joint ticket?
21 Should SUSU name a Queen and keeper of SUSU the cat?
22 Should SUSU create a sleeping area in the Cube?
23 Should SUSU buy a jukebox?
24 Should SUSU affiliate to the English Disco Lovers
25 Should SUSU give free drinks to students when the Bridge is full?
26 Should SUSU rename the Redbrick the Thatcher Plaza?
27 Should SUSU allocate more money to archery?
28 Should SUSU shut down the Wessex Scene entirely?

AGM logoSo where do we go from here? All the students who have submitted these ideas will be contacted with information on how to put together a full motion for the AGM. If any other student wishes to submit a motion to the AGM as well, then you are welcome to, but they will be heard after the ranked ideas.

Don’t forget that for the first time at the AGM, you don’t even have to be there to vote! Register your proxy vote today and you can vote whilst watching online, or even vote in advance if you know that you’re going to be busy on the day.

Can we clarify what date the AGM will be held, please? Societies have been told it is the 10th May in several emails?

    Hey Lacey,

I sure can. The SUSU AGM is on Wednesday 8th May at 1:15 in the Bridge. This is separate from the societies AGM which takes place on 10th May. Lots of different groups around SUSU hold Annual General Meetings – however, it is at the main SUSU AGM that we decide policy for the whole Union for the year ahead. Hope that clarifies.

How do people run for Union Council chair?

It’s a pleasure to meet you, SUSU Body. I’ve been a big fan of your work for a long time.

Any student can run for the position of Union Council chair, as long as they will be here next year as a student. It’s a very simple process and just involves you coming to the AGM on 8th May and doing a short speech.

We want to make sure that the whole AGM is accessible to as many students as possible, so if you can’t attend, you can submit a statement to be read out at the AGM signifying your running.

    Cheers

Did the motion to end the print publication of the Wessex Scene not get equal numbers of Discuss and Don’t Discuss votes?

It did at some points throughout the day, Jacob. However at 7pm when we closed the polls (to ensure that students had a whole 24 hours to show their preferences), it had 96 discuss votes vs. 108 don’t discuss.

This was quite a different story from the ‘shut down Wessex Scene entirely’ idea, which received the highest number of don’t discuss votes of all.

Ah okay, my mistake. I thought the voting ended at 5 and assumed the numbers as they stood just after 5 were final. Apologies!

Oh no need to apologise, Jacob. The plan was originally to do the polling from 5-5pm, but the website coding took a bit longer than expected as this is the first time that we’ve done this. Thanks for taking part – did any of the ideas you like end up near the top?

Well… for me, not really… but that’s democracy I suppose, and I imagine most people will be happy with the results. I think this new scheme’s been a success and hope it’s used for future AGMs. Thanks for the explanation.
