World Mental Health Day

If there’s one thing you do today, PLEASE watch this video. I hope it will change the way you think about your friends and family, and even strangers you may smile at in the street, because you just don’t know what they may be struggling with.

The media are leading the game when it comes to stigma towards people with mental illnesses.

There’s an overwhelming pressure to be perfect in every aspect of our lives, and it’s just not right. Particularly when it comes to mental illness. Actress, Naomi Bentley, spoke of her experiences of mental illness this week, describing her struggles with a ‘silent illness that isn’t validated’, ‘a dark secret’. She also stated that for her, prejudice she felt as a result of her label as mentally ill, was a trigger.

We need to re-brand mental illness, remove the ridicule, and stop scaremongering. Do we behave this way towards people with a physical illness such as diabetes? No. Do we question ourselves before asking a friend or colleague who has been off work with a cold, how they are? No. So lets just make the choice to treat everyone with respect and consideration.

The theme for World Mental Health Day 2013 is the good mental health of older people. This video epitomises what we should strive for. So whatever you have planned for today, please look after your brain as well your body!
