Activities Room Renovation

At the AGM last year, a policy was passed ensuring that we renovate the Activities Room and you can read that policy here. Now is the time for the collection of further feedback which will guide what actions and redevelopments are made in the coming months.

The Activities Room is a key space for many of our student groups, being used throughout the year for a range of purposes and it is important that this facility is made the best that it can be, for as many as possible, long into the future.

As a result of this policy, I’ve drafted a survey for groups to complete about a whole range of topics, including flooring, storage, space and sound. This feedback will be very beneficial for drafting plans moving forward so that renovation can begin.

If you would like to have your say, please fill in the survey below by November 30th!

It would be really nice to have a wall of fixed floor to ceiling mirrors for dancers so we can use the space like a studio and to the best ability we can. Also a slightly sprung wooden floor so you can dance properly, the floor at the moment is impractical and painful to dance on. If this isn’t possible then a cupboard in the room for the rolls of dance floor so we can get them out and put them away ourselves? A sound system similar to the one in the MPS would also be really useful

The table tennis club currently use the room for 5 hours per week. Although it is too small for the size of the club and we would prefer to be in a different room, there are a number of things that could be improved to benefit us. Lighting is very important, and the (lack of!) curtains means that visibility is poor when the sun light comes straight in – a simple improvement that would make a big difference. The floor tiles definitely need improving, as the broken ones can cause safety problems when trying to move around quickly. The space could probably be used a lot better. If the mats and cupboard didn’t take up the end of the room, the space could probably be used for a fourth table – which we need with so many members (we have about 30-35 this year, but a lot more don’t join because we can’t offer them enough time to play, because we’re so limited by space etc). The windows can cause problems, as the room can get too warm, but we’re generally reluctant to open the windows in case balls accidentally get hit out – so if that could be prevented in some way, that would be very helpful.

These are all very valid points Anthony, I trust you have already filled in the survey?

In terms of space, its very difficult to cater to everyone appropriately due to our limited resources in the Union at this time but hopefully we can maximize usage as best as possible.
