The Shop is Changing

Happy New Year everyone!

We have some exciting news for you; our main supplier of food and drink products is changing to Spar. This will be the catalyst for a significant investment (circa £90,000) within the Shop area which will include new coolers, an off-licence area, new till systems, new hot display counters, new space efficient layouts and a general facelift.

The great news is that all this will take place with little or no disruption to our members and customers. It is intended to carry out these works out of hours and they will be phased to keep any disruption to a minimum.

At the same time we are currently refurbishing the former Wessex Clothing outlet to become “The Shop on Top” which will be opening following extensive refurbishment on the 1st of February. This will create a great retail outlet selling our clothing range, giftware and additional stationery items.

We believe these investments along with the changes in supply will help speed up service, deliver more varied selections and keep our facilities modern and relevant to our customer needs. We are anticipating all this to be fully operational by Easter and look forward to showing you our new facilities as they change over the forthcoming months.

All these changes are to make our facilities as good for you as they can be, with great deals and prices.

New year, new Shop.

I hope with all this change the name will remain and not become a Spar or The Shop sponsored by Spar or something else equally imaginative. Equally, I hope that this still means profits go back to SUSU to support the other student groups.

Absolutely Steven! It’s simply a change in our primary supplier from Palmer and Harvey to Spar

This is absolutely ridiculous! The SUSU Shop provides the union with the ability to generate significant revenue (has it always has done) and could also help facilitate student enterprise by distributing student-led products and produce. Selling out to a Spar because it’s easier for you is frankly immoral. But I’m glad your Humanities degree gave you the business acumen and knowledge to make such a stupid decision at Union Council – you mong.

    Hi FOT,

Just to clarify, The Shop will not become a Spar. Spar are simply going to be taking over from Palmer and Harvey as our main suppliers – with greater economies of scale we’ll be able to get our members better prices. We’ll still have some products supplied by other suppliers, such as many from our extensive range of international foods. On top of that, I’m really proud that we actually will be selling student created wares in ‘The Shop on Top’ as a part of our enterprise project.

So fear not, FOT, The Shop will stay SUSUs and will still generate significant revenue for us, but we’ll be able to get a more extensive range of products for more competitive prices by taking advantage of a great deal with the world’s largest food retailer.

How will this affect the range of food options available in the shop, is it just going to be spar ranges or will the varied existing ranges remain.
