Mature Students: let me know about your university experience
Recently, I was approached about a negative student experience from a mature students solely due to the fact that they are a mature student.
Mature students in some faculties have an amazing experience and are welcomed and encouraged as much as the ‘average’ student. However, having spoken to President of the Mature Society, I understand that this is not the case across all areas of the University. This is not acceptable, every student, no matter where you’re from, how old you are or what subject you study, should have a pleasant, warm and encouraging student experience.
What I want to do
I want to work with the University to ensure that Mature Students are not penalised through their degree, just because of age. Considerations are made across the University for other demographics, so why should Mature students be any different? I want to make sure that the University takes commitments of Mature Students seriously when delivering the courses.
I want to compile a report with real examples of situations that need to be prevented and issues with processes that need solutions. I will present this to the University and work with them to make improvements, but for that to happen I need to hear from you.
What I need from you
In order to compile a report, I need to have the real examples from you. Unless you specifically specify otherwise, I will completely anonymise anything that I receive and make sure that it is detached from anything that could identify you e.g. what subject you are doing or year you are in for the report and also when speaking to anyone about the concerns raised.
If you would like to share your experiences with me, please email me on firstname.lastname@example.org or send me a Facebook message. If you’d feel more comfortable not coming directly to me, President of Mature Society (Leon Rea) has agreed to hear from you on the society email address (email@example.com) and he will anonymise anything you send to him so not even I have your name.
If you have any questions/concerns about anything or would like more information on my plans, please do get in contact with me.
