When do you want to graduate?

Are you considering doing a Postgraduate degree? Are you currently doing a Postgraduate degree? If yes, then I want to hear from you!

Currently, there are two sets of graduation: Summer (July) and Winter (December) – but these options aren’t available to everyone. Different faculties decide when they want to hold graduation ceremonies, most are based around making sure that Undergraduate students don’t have to wait too long to graduate before the end of their degree. BUT, this can leave Postgraduates waiting up to between 9 months and a year after their degree to get the opportunity to graduate.

Waiting so long to graduate can be difficult e.g. International Students can have difficulties with the expense of travel or VISAs, many people will have jobs in different parts of the country/world so it can be difficult to travel back to Southampton.

For instance: if you are a Master’s student and finish your degree at the end of September, but your faculty doesn’t hold a ceremony in December you will have to wait until July for the opportunity to graduate. OR if you finish your PhD in August and there’s no winter graduation, you would have to wait until July the following year.

What I want to know is: do you have a preference? does it make a difference to whether you would attend graduation or not? OR does it really not matter to you?

Let me know in this short survey. If you’ve got any other questions or thoughts, feel free to get in contact with me via Facebook or email me on vpeducation@susu.org.

I am strongly agree this suggestions! I don’t like wait for almost 9 months to get my degree. Also, at that time, I need to apply for new visa and I will work, so I am not sure whether my boss allowed me to have a break and attent to grasuation ceremony.

That’s exactly part of the reason we want to hear from you! To make this system more accessible to all students. Please make sure that you fill out the survey so we can register your views and use it to help lobby the university! https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/D5873P3

Thanks for your comment – many students would prefer to graduate in December rather than July, therefore we are collecting this data from students so we can lobby the University to allow this to happen. I hope you filled out the survey so your response can be recorded officially.
