Goodbye Council – and here’s to the future!
The blog below is from Jade Head, Chair of Union Council. I just want to thank for her work this year: even when dealing with challenging circumstances, such as an Emergency Council and the transition away from the Council model, she always worked hard to put democracy and the future of the Union at the top of Union Council’s priorities, which is by no means an easy task!
I’d just like to say thank you to all the members of Union Council for all the work they’ve done this year.
We’ve achieved a lot this year – we passed the refurbishment of the Cube, the Democracy Review, supported the Invest Positive campaign and supported health care and medicine students in their campaigns against cuts, as well as so many other things.
We’ve also seen some really great debate this year, and had good discussions on a huge number of ideas. Everyone has been very enthusiastic with their ideas, and the attendance at meetings has been great – we’ve had the most quorate Council meetings ever!
We’ve also celebrated the work of dozens of students and student groups with the Union Council Stars and – new for this year – the Student Groups Stars, which have been an excellent way of recognising the amazing work done by our 350+ student groups. I’m delighted to say that the Student Groups Stars have now been added to the Rules, and from next year, both the Union Stars and Student Groups Stars will be awarded every month during term-time.
To those who are leaving us now, we wish you the best of luck in your future studies/careers, and for those of you who will still be around next year, there will be plenty of ways to get involved – look out for these when the new term starts.
We’d be particularly keen on getting as many people as possible on the new Zones – there’s loads of open places and you can sit on as many Zones as you want!
It’s been a pleasure to meet you all, and I look forward to see what you all go on and do next.
